To celebrate the 74th anniversary of Allied bombing that hit Buccino on 16 settembre 1943, in imperishable remembrance of that tragic event, here we anticipate some biographical insights on the victims of that terrible day, that, along with other news and a significant documentary appendix, will be among the novelties contained in the new revised and enlarged edition of mine book dedicated to the events of those days which is currently in preparation.

These new data are the result of my research in the registers of the Civil Status of the Municipality of Buccino, whom I thank for facilitating my consultation.

Let's start with a correction first.

Among the victims of the bombing, Cataldo Marzocca was mistakenly included in the book, an agricultural laborer of 25 years born in Corato (Bari), who lived in the Manzelle district with his wife Maria Isoldi. He actually died that 16 September but not because of the bombing, but for a shot from a firearm, as was appropriately reported to the local Carabinieri barracks. For his wife Maria, But, the tragedy did not end that day: the 14 October 1943 He was born, indeed, his little boy who was named after his late father, but also the baby a few months later, the 24 marzo 1944, he died alone 5 months.

On the evening of 16 settembre (but not because of the bombing) Michele Daniele also died (47 years), husband of Angela Parisi.

Unfortunately, very few information has been found so far on non-Buccinese victims.

The Bartilotti and Moscatelli families were tragically affected, displaced from Naples to escape the bombing, and the Grimaldi and Cipriano families, coming from Salerno.

The Neapolitan Giuseppe Bartilotti and his wife Fortuna Gagliano had to endure the death of their four children Iolanda (5 years), Lucia (10 years), Elena (12 years) and Rita (16 years), all born in Naples.

Ciro Moscatelli and his wife Rosa Saraiello suffered the loss of their children Antonio (10 months) and Carmela (3 years), both born in Naples.

Giovanni Grimaldi and his wife Angelina Pompe to the Barber of Salerno, also displaced, the bombing took the little Hercules away (10 years) and Cosimo (13 years).

He was transferred from Morciano di Romagna to Buccino's office, where he arrived in July 1940. He lived first in via Rimembranza 6 and then, from 1942, in Market Square 3. His wife Lucia Clemente also moved with him, born in Tripoli on 9 July 1914 who he had married in Pompeii on 13 June 1938, and the two sons Elio, born in Morciano di Romagna on 23 settembre 1939, and Giorgio, born in Rimini on 12 novembre 1938. To Buccino the 29 June 1943 instead their third daughter was born, Claudia Pietropaola. Less than three months after the bombing, his wife Lucia and little Elio were taken from the prosecutor. They lived in the third alley S. Spirit, 9. The bombs of that day killed both his son Gennaro Gerardo (6 years) that his wife Teresa but also left serious problems on him who died, always because of the injuries sustained that day, a 48 years the 26 marzo 1949 in Naples.

Tragic was also the day for Giuseppe Zitarosa, the auctioneer, to which the bombs took away both his wife Concetta Grieco (45 years) is the young daughter Teresa (18 years).

Another particular event was that which involved the engineer Almerico Solitro. Born on 2 February 1877 in the house in via Porticella 31 by the usher Michele Solitro and his wife Francesca Galella, he had married Luisa Guzzo and had emigrated to the United States probably in the early twentieth century. Returned to Italy, he too with his family had been displaced from Rome to Buccino, where he lived. In the few, tragic moments of 16 September lost her daughter Franca (32 years), nata in America, and her maiden sister Clotilde (60 years), also emigrated to America, where had the 6 June 1910 with the steamer "Duca di Genova" together with Almerico's wife. The latter, around you, he was seriously injured in his body and spirit by the bombing: paralyzed in the lower limbs due to a splinter of the bombs, died a 68 years the 18 marzo 1945 at the hospital in Nocera where he had been hospitalized the previous year for the aggravation of his physical and psychological conditions.

Even Miss Elettra Pugliese (62 years), daughter of the late Prospero and Enrichetta Fuccia, was seriously injured by the bombs and, despite some surgery, died at the Ospedali Riuniti of Salerno on 27 December 1943.

Despite the serious injuries and fractures in the legs caused by the bombs, Carlotta Volpe managed to recover (56 years), daughter of Salvatore and Caterina Bardaro, and the young Giuseppe Gallucci (7 years) son of Nicola and Carmela Solimo. Surgery was required for both, but it was carried out directly in their homes and they were never hospitalized. The Fox was cared for by family members, while Gallucci, of poor family, he could also enjoy the financial assistance of the municipality.
