Buccino nella Storia – Participated photographic archive

“Buccino nella storia” is a project that appeared publicly on the net on 13 marzo 2012, thanks to the intuition and commitment of the local historian Emanuele Catone who takes care of its management.

The reasons and aims of the project

The project has its central element in the collection of photographs of the Buccinese families, having as a basic idea that of inviting all Buccinesi – including those around the world - rummaging through drawers and providing antique photos of their families, often forgotten.

The set of photos collected is intended to be the tool to recover and recompose the memory of the whelk that no longer exists, from the oldest one of’ 19th-20th century to the relatively more recent one – but still so far away – of the years immediately following the earthquake of 23 novembre 1980.

Photographs seemed to us the best and most immediate way to try to reconstruct places, activities, events, protagonists, traditions and the daily life of a world “ancient” that the earthquake and the subsequent urban and social transformations quickly made it disappear.

All that, obviously, not for a nostalgic purpose, but to avoid the dispersion also from the memory of a reality of which we all are and must feel proudly children, which is a necessary condition to preserve and defend identity, the values ​​and culture of our community.

In fact, we believe that it is not only useful but also necessary to try to recover in the widest possible way a documentation that becomes progressively more precious and that risks disappearing., in order to then make it available to all Buccinesi.

The collection of photos, indeed, it is only the starting point of the project.

The immediately following objectives will be to periodically arrange thematic exhibitions, that they can be both an occasion for documentation and remembrance and a source of stimuli and proposals for citizenship, and to come to the publication of some volumes with the story in images of the nineteenth-twentieth century whelk.

The ambitious final goal will instead be the establishment of a virtual photographic archive which in the years to come will be available for consultation by the entire Buccine community at the Historical Archive – Municipality library, and by the people of Buccinesi around the world through a dedicated internet portal.

Thanks to the contribution, to the liberality and commitment of some people – that we take this opportunity to thank affectionately – the photographic archive “Buccino nella Storia” has so far reached a consistency of approx 1500 photo.

For greater visibility of the project, some of the most significant photos are also published on our pages on Facebook (also reachable from the box on the right), Flickr e Instagram where they are divided by category in different thematic albums. Our pages are constantly followed by approx 2000 people.

The choice to use social forums for the initiative is also linked to the desire to address the project in particular to the younger generations of Buccinesi that, having no direct memories, they risk not having any knowledge of the whelk of the past and their roots.

This project, But, it needs not only users, but above all of direct and active protagonists.

We expect everyone to cooperate effectively in researching and making the photographs available, sincerely thanking all those who will do so.

We will then be very grateful to whom, sharing this initiative, would like to help us publicize the initiative so that we can expand the available photographic archive as soon as possible.

We address a particular appeal to the heirs of the ancient photographers of our country and to the owners of large photographic collections, which we hope will want to share the precious materials in their possession with the entire citizenry.
